Thanks to an eyewitness who called police, a dumped cat was saved and her abuser has been brought to justice.

Rosie was callously sealed into a Tupperware container and thrown into a dumpster late last month, but she was rescued in time and is going on to begin a new life.

John Cokefair, 55, of Aberdeen, New Jersey was identified as the man behind the dumping of Rosie, who was his girlfriend’s 10 year old pet cat, on August 27. Rosie was rescued after a witness saw Cokefair deposit her at around 6:30 p.m. in a Tree Haven Apartment complex dumpster, according to Monmouth County SPCA Chief Law Enforcement Officer Victor “Buddy” Amato. The witness took down Cokefair’s license tag number and reported him to police, who tracked him down and arrested him.

“If it weren’t for a witness who saw it, the cat would be in a landfill now,” Chief Amato said.

Cokefair was charged with two counts of animal cruelty: abuse of a living animal and abandonment, to which he pleaded guilty in a court appearance at Aberdeen Township Municipal Court today. He was fined $2,000 ($1,000 per offense) and was told by Judge Michael Pugliese that he could not own a pet ever again.
